PROJECT OVERVIEW

Kooky, a startup specializing in customizable phone cases, needed an intuitive and user-friendly online store to attract a broader audience. The challenge was to create an engaging, fun, and efficient shopping experience that allows users to easily customize and purchase phone cases at affordable prices. The design aimed to resolve the existing frustrations of limited product options, confusing navigation, and lack of price transparency, ensuring a smooth shopping experience across all devices.

Project Summary

Role and Duration

As the UX Designer, I was responsible for conducting user research, creating wireframes, and iterating on designs based on usability testing and feedback. The project was completed over a span of four weeks using Adobe XD.

KOOKY

Custom Phone Case Experience

The term "kooky" suggests something quirky, unconventional, and full of personality

THE PROBLEM

Users were frustrated with the limited design options available on existing phone case websites. They found the navigation on these sites to be cluttered and confusing, leading to a poor overall shopping experience. Additionally, users were often unable to view product prices until they added items to their cart, which added to their frustration.

User Problems

Business Problems

Kooky needed to differentiate itself in a crowded market by offering a seamless, enjoyable shopping experience that encouraged users to purchase customized phone cases. The lack of a user-friendly interface and clear pricing was leading to potential loss of sales and decreased customer satisfaction.

GOALS

  • Easily browse a wide variety of phone case designs.

  • Navigate the website with ease and clarity.

  • Customize phone cases with minimal effort.

  • Access clear pricing information before adding items to the cart.

User Goals

Business/Product Goals

  • Increase customer engagement and conversion rates by providing an enjoyable and hassle-free shopping experience.

  • Expand the product offerings and improve the overall brand image to attract more users.

  • Ensure that the website is optimized for various devices, enhancing accessibility and usability.

Visual and Prototypes

The design system was carefully developed to reflect Kooky’s brand personality, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints. High-fidelity prototypes were created to visualize the final design, with variations optimized for mobile and tablet devices. The prototypes highlighted a minimalistic interface with streamlined navigation, clear customization options, and a visually appealing layout that made the shopping process both fun and efficient.

The design process began with user interviews, where I gathered insights from five participants about their experiences with current phone case shopping websites. This research helped me identify key pain points and areas for improvement. Based on these findings, I created a user persona named Dev, a tech-savvy software engineer who values variety, customization, and a seamless shopping experience.

Wireframe and Design Iteration

Starting with paper wireframes, I explored different layouts that could address the identified pain points. I then digitized these into low-fidelity wireframes using Adobe XD, focusing on simplifying the navigation and making the customization process more intuitive. The design was iterated based on feedback from unmoderated usability tests, where 5 participants interacted with the prototype. Key improvements included adding a delete button in the cart, introducing a search option for phone models, and making pricing information visible earlier in the shopping process.

RESULTS

The redesigned website significantly enhanced the user experience, leading to increased user engagement and satisfaction. By addressing key user pain points, the new design improved the overall shopping flow, making it easier for users to find and customize phone cases. Hypothetically, this could result in a 25% increase in conversion rates and a 30% reduction in cart abandonment rates. The introduction of clear pricing before adding items to the cart likely boosted customer trust and transparency, further contributing to business growth.

Impact of Design Solution

Next Steps

The project demonstrated that even small design changes could make a significant impact, emphasizing the importance of user-centric design in achieving business goals. Future steps include further testing and iteration to refine the experience and explore additional features to enhance the user journey.
